Saudi Arabia moved beyond the concept of relative food security to achieve self-sufficiency in many sectors such as milk and poultry, Faisal Marzouq Al-Fahadi, Almarai Co.’s vice president of corporate affairs, said.
Speaking at a seminar on Food Security and Environmental Sustainability at King Faisal University in Al-Ahsa, Al-Fahadi pointed to the Kingdom's achievement of food abundance during the coronavirus outbreak, noting that this showed the strength of the national economy and the cohesion of supply chains for local food companies.
The responsibility of the private sector to contribute to food security in its quantitative and qualitative concepts was not only to meet the demand for food, but also to provide a product of high nutritional value that met people's needs, the vice president added.
Al-Fahadi added that enhancing food security is the concept that Almarai operates with, by increasing production, better utilization of tangible and intangible resources, along with investing in improving agricultural capacity, productivity, manufacturing facilities, and transport and supply chains, with a focus on sustainability.
