Cabinet extends SAPTCO commitment contract, sets up National Transport Safety Center

The Cabinet meeting

The Saudi Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz today, Nov. 29, approved extending the commitment contract of Saudi Public Transport Co. (SAPTCO), the state-run SPA reported.

The contract will be extended from Feb. 3, 2022 to Dec. 31, 2023, or until the commencement of operations in all districts under new contracts, whichever is earlier.

The Cabinet also approved the establishment of the National Transport Safety Center.

SAPTCO’s franchise agreement was exclusive since its inception in 1979. It was renewed twice for 15 years each. The agreement was extended for one year in 2020 and 2021, according to Argaam data.

In 2019, the Cabinet decided the intercity bus transport market to five franchise areas.
