Saudi Arabia summoned the Iranian ambassador to the kingdom on Saturday over “hostile” remarks made by officials, the kingdom’s ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

The ministry said it holds Iran responsible for protection of the Saudi embassy in Tehran, its consulate in Mashhad, and all personnel.

Earlier on Saturday, Iran had summoned a Saudi diplomat to protest the execution of religious cleric Sheikh Nimr Al-Nimr.

Following news of his execution, protestors ransacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran, setting fire to the premises.

Iran’s foreign ministry said it would work to prevent any gatherings in front of Saudi diplomatic buildings.
