POS transactions hit SAR 12.02 bln in week ending March 5: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached SAR 12.02 billion in the week ending March 5, from SAR 9.41 billion in the previous week, recording its highest level in 13 weeks, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that 139.5 million transactions were processed in the week.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a hike in POS transactions during the week, except for hotels, which fell by 8%.
The education sector increased the most at 210%, followed by telecommunications and food & beverages with a rise of 49% and 40%, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on the food & beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 2 billion, representing 17% of total sales, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.6 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value, with nearly SAR 3.7 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.83 billion.
