The company operates in the gold, industrial metals, aluminum and phosphate production sectors.
Overview
Maaden was formed by Royal Decree in 1997 as a state-owned company to facilitate the development of Saudi Arabia's mineral resources. In 2008, the company listed 50 percent of its shares on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul).
The company conducts its business through three divisions: Phosphates, Aluminum and Precious Metals, and Base Metals.
Its activities are focused on gold mining from several mines throughout Saudi Arabia; i.e. Mahd Ad Dahab, Bulghah, Sukhaybarat, Al Amar, As-Suq and Ad Duwayhi mines.
Maaden has expanded its activities to cover phosphate. In 2007, it founded Maaden's Phosphate as a joint venture with SABIC, the leading Saudi petrochemicals company; then founded Waad Al-Shamal’s Phosphate project in partnership with SABIC and Mosaic, the world’s largest fertilizer producer.
Maaden also founded Maaden’s Aluminum Project, a partnership with Canada’s Alcoa. The project started production in 2014.
Maaden added another segment to its portfolio in 2014, by acquiring a copper project in Jabal Sayd in partnership with Barrick Gold Corporation of Canada.
