Saudi telecom regulator, the Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), launched open access agreements between the Kingdom's six telecom operators, to provide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) broadband services through any subscriber-selected service provider, independent of infrastructure ownership, it said in a statement on Sunday.
The agreements were signed between Saudi Telecom Co. (STC), Etihad Etisalat Co. (Mobily), Mobile Telecommunication Co. Saudi Arabia (Zain Saudi), Etihad Atheeb Telecommunication Co. (GO), Integrated Telecom Co., and Dawiyat Telecom.
The initiative aims to encourage competition, attract investment, and increase broadband subscriptions by improving service quality and consumer choice.
Subscribers will be able to choose their FTTH service provider independent of fiber infrastructure ownership within 90 days of the signing date, the statement added.
“The adoption of an open access model will increase the use of our fiber-optic infrastructure through the development of commercial agreements that make it easier for subscribers to move from one provider to another,” Mohammed Al Tamimi, governor, CITC, said.
