The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell by 2% to SAR 6.6 billion in the week ending August 22, 2020, from SAR 6.74 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that a total of 58.5 million transactions were processed in the week ending August 22.

The POS sales of the majority of sectors dropped during the week ending August 22, led by the clothes and footwear, which fell by about 11%, followed by hotels and miscellaneous goods & services sectors, which saw 9% and 7% decline, respectively.
On the other hand, education sector’s POS transactions saw the sharpest increase during the week ending August 22, rising by 148%, followed by recreation & culture sector and electronics & electric appliances sector with an increase of 16% and 10%, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the same week, valued at nearly SAR 1.05 billion, followed by restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 858 million and the healthcare sector with SAR 595 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with SAR 2.1 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with over SAR 1.1 billion.
