Crown Prince announces reforms to Saudi legislative system

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, announced reforms to improve the Kingdom’s legislative system. 

Saudi Arabia is proceeding with the reforms of its legislative system through introducing and reforming laws that protect the rights and enhance the principles of equity and transparency. 

The personal status law is one of four new laws under preparation to reform the Kingdom’s judicial institutions. 

The legislative environment improvement process is ongoing in the Kingdom, Prince Mohammed affirmed, adding that the new laws and regulations will be issued this year.  

All laws will be referred to the Cabinet and Shura Council and will be issued pursuant to the applicable legislative rules.  

The personal status law, the civil transactions law, penal code and evidence law represent a new wave of judicial reforms in the Kingdom. 

Prince Mohammed added that the absence of these legislations led to discrepancies in court rulings, unclarity about the rules governing incidents and practices, which in turn prolonged the time of litigation.  

Moreover, the lack of these legislations was painful for many individuals and families, especially women.
