POS transactions rise 3% to SAR 9.42 bln in week ending June 5

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions rose by 3% to SAR 9.42 billion in the week ending June 5, 2021, from SAR 9.17 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

Data showed that a total of 102.4 million transactions were processed in the week ending June 5, the highest since the start of monitoring weekly POS operations in May 2020.

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using their ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

The POS transactions of most sectors grew during the week ending June 5, led by the education sector, which rose by 13% through sales of SAR 79 million, followed by clothes & footwear with an 11% increase.

On the other hand, hotels sector saw a 32% decline in POS to SAR 130 million, while food & beverages dropped by 3%.

Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the same week, valued at nearly SAR 1.44 billion, followed by restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.34 billion and the miscellaneous goods & services sector with SAR 898.7 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.92 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with over SAR 1.46 billion.
