Saudi energy ministry allocates 2 plots in Jeddah, Rabigh industrial cities for renewable projects

Ministry of Energy allocated two land plots with an area of 12 million square meters (sqm) to develop two renewable energy plants with a capacity of 600 megawatts (MW) in the Third Industrial City in Jeddah and the Industrial City in Rabigh, via the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON).

The National Renewable Energy Program constitutes one of the main enablers to achieve the optimal energy mix and the strategic objectives of the electricity sector, by creating a competitive environment that attracts private sector investments, as well as encouraging partnerships between the public and private sectors, and promoting the establishment of a new industry for such energy technology, according to Saudi Press Agency.

MODON provides its products and services to its investing partners to capitalize on them in promoting renewable energy projects in the Kingdom, the ministry said, adding that it has worked with MODON to provide the necessary land plots for these projects in a number of industrial cities.

The sites designated for these renewable energy projects were selected by a specialized Saudi technical team, in order to achieve the highest possible efficiency for electricity production, by working with various entities to determine the sites and provide the necessary land.

The ministry is working to diversify the energy mix to produce electricity, as the Kingdom aims to achieve the optimal mix of energy, which is the most efficient and the least expensive in electricity production.

This can be achieved through shifting from liquid fuel to natural gas, in addition to renewable energy sources that will represent nearly 50% of the energy mix for electricity production by 2030, according to data available to Argaam.
