POS transactions rise to SAR 8.85 bln in week ending Sept. 25: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions increased to SAR 8.85 billion in the week ended Sept. 25, from SAR 8.37 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

Data showed that a total of 103.6 million transactions were processed in the week ending Sept. 25.

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Most sectors witnessed a rise in POS during the week ended Sept. 25, led by hotels that rose by 47%. The furniture sector came second with an increase of 24%.

On the other hand, the education sector showed a decline of 52% in POS transactions to SAR 62.8 million.

Consumer spending focused on restaurants and cafes sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.25 billion, representing 14% of POS transactions, followed by food and beverages sector with SAR 1.21 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.80 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.43 billion.
