Environment ministry launches project to develop algae production techniques

During the launch of the project

Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment Water and Agriculture (MEWA), represented by the National Fisheries Development Program (NFDP), launched a project to develop economic and commercial algae production techniques, with the aim to localize algae industry technology in the Kingdom.

The project aims to make the algae industry a major tributary of industrial, food and human development in the Kingdom, Ali Al Shaikhi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NFDP, said in a statement from the Ministry.

He pointed out that the first commercial model of its kind in the Kingdom for algae cultivation will be established next year, in addition to setting up a unit specialized in applied algae research.

Al Shaikhi added that the project plan consists of building strategic partnerships with specialized global expertise houses, identifying the trends and outputs that will be focused on locally, and preparing a strategic action plan, listing local experiences, building capacities and forming a capable national team in the areas of the algae industry, ahead of the launch of the pilot project.

Moreover, National Aquaculture Group (NAQUA) entered into an agreement with Al-Manarah Development Co. on the sidelines of the project launch, as part of the ministry’s initiative to improve food security, develop the aquaculture industry and help various sectors realize Saudi Vision 2030 goals.
