Kingdom to adopt carbon emission permit system locally, says Energy Minister

Saudi Arabia's Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said the 2060 net zero target will enable the Kingdom to achieve a smooth and viable transition, without risking economic or social impacts.

In his speech to the Saudi Green Initiative Forum today, Oct. 23, the minister added that the net zero target can be achieved before 2060.

"We need to mitigate all gases that contribute to climate change, and we have to look at all sectors, and we have to look at all solutions,” Prince Abdulaziz said.

He added that the Kingdom can convert 50% of its energy needs to renewable resources, and the Kingdom will adopt the system of carbon emission permits and carbon offset locally.

The minister also indicated that he decided to issue nationally limited contributions this year, in coincidence with the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference.

As part of its smart meter program, the Kingdom managed to install 127,000 units per day, and the project was completed within two months, the minister concluded.
