Kingdom ready to lead global hydrogen sector

The Saudi government, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, launched the largest green hydrogen project in the world, as part of Vision 2030.

The Kingdom started to build a world-scale green hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered by renewable energy, which is a joint venture between Acwa Power and Air Products and Chemicals Inc. The plant will come on stream by 2025.

The project will supply 650 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen for transportation globally and save the world three million tons per year of CO2.

To increase the opportunities of using hydrogen in the Kingdom, Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud and German Economic Affairs Minister Peter Altmaier signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on establishing cooperation on hydrogen between Germany and Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Aramco signed five memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with national and global investors to develop a green hydrogen project, manufacture advanced nonmetallic building materials and explore localization of digital technologies for oil and gas applications.

The first MoU was inked with Modern Industrial Investment Holding Group and Intercontinental Energy to develop a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Saudi Arabia.

To explore new opportunities for hydrogen production, support innovation, and promote knowledge transfer, the Kingdom aspires to become one of the world's first exporters of clean hydrogen. It also aims to make the challenge of climate change a major goal that draws its future role in global energy production.
