POS transactions hit SAR 10.4 bln in week ending April 23: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 10.42 billion in the week ending April 23, from SAR 9.99 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that 112.46 million transactions were processed in the week.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Sectors reported a mixed performance in terms of POS transactions during the week, with jewelry noting the highest POS transactions, which surged 36%. Clothes and footwear followed with a 23% increase and hotels with 14%.
Meanwhile, food and beverages reported the lowest POS transactions, with a 6% decline. It was followed by construction materials and fuel stations with a 5% drop each.
Consumer spending focused on the clothes and footwear sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.42 billion, representing nearly 14% of total sales, followed by the food and beverages sector with SAR 1.35 billion, or 13% of total sales.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 3.15 billion, representing 30% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.78 billion.
