POS weekly transactions retreat to SAR 10.9 bln: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions reached nearly SAR 10.9 billion in the week ended Feb. 11, compared to SAR 12 billion in the week before, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that about 160.8 million transactions were processed during the week.
POS transactions represent what consumers spend using ATMs and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors plunged during the week, except for the public utilities and hotels sectors, which rose by 1% each.
The education sector recorded the steepest decline by 35%. The telecommunications came next at 15% and recreation and culture at 14%.
During the week, consumer spending focused on the restaurants and cafes sector, reaching nearly SAR 1.68 billion, followed by the food and beverages sector with SAR 1.66 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions in terms of value with almost SAR 3.58 billion, or 33% of total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.6 billion, as indicated below:
