SEC dismisses 1 executive, 3 directors for Sharurah power outage

Saudi Electricity Co.’s (SEC) board of directors held an emergency meeting on July 12to determine the investigation results of the power outage in Sharurah Governorate. The investigation was conducted under the supervision of the Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority (SERA), with the assistance of independent technical consulting offices.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the investigation concluded that one of the circuit breakers malfunctioned due to not carrying out the necessary maintenance and the failure of the protection devices to operate as required.

Therefore, the impact was widespread, leading to a comprehensive interruption of electrical service, which resulted in the company’s failure to provide power to consumers in Sharurah Governorate. The SEC’s board decided to dismiss one of its senior executives and three directors due to their shortcomings and negligence in performing their duties.

Additionally, the board appointed Abdul Al-Amoudi as Executive Vice President of Power Generation Activity, Saad Al Shahrani as Head of Southern Power Generation Operations Sector, Mohammed Al Shahrani as Director of Gas Stations for Power Generation in the Southern Sector, and Ali Al Kathiri as Director of the Sharurah Power Plant.

The company’s board approved the implementation of the necessary technical measures to address the deficiencies that caused the interruption of electrical service to consumers, the implementation of the necessary maintenance programs and the review of the settings of the protection devices.

SEC affirmed its full commitment to implementing all directives of the SERA’s board.
