MEWA seeks to enhance agricultural production, reduce waste: Minister

Saudi Arabia has launched several initiatives to combat desertification, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) Abdulrahman AlFadley said in his opening address at COP16 in Riyadh.

The Kingdom is working to implement a national strategy for agriculture to enhance production efficiency and sustainable land management, he noted, adding that another strategy for food security aimed at reducing loss and waste by 50% from the current levels is also in the works.

The government established an environment fund, launched the Green Saudi Initiative, and five specialized environmental centers to comply with the best standards. This is in addition to international initiatives to confront challenges such as drought, desertification, and others, and limit their persistence.

AlFadley also pointed out that the Kingdom plans to cooperate with the international community in confronting environmental challenges, as the Middle East region is considered the most affected by drought and desertification. Losses from the deterioration of agricultural lands and forests are estimated at about $6 trillion annually, he said.

Meanwhile, the minister announced the launch of Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership, which aims to strengthen multilateral efforts to enhance the ability to confront drought, especially in the countries that are most vulnerable to drought. It also commits to proactive solutions, with a support by the Kingdom of $150 million over the next 10 years.
