Diriyah, SEC jointly open 2 power stations for SAR 682M

Diriyah Co. announced today, Jan. 6, the opening of two cutting-edge power transmission stations in Diriyah, jointly with Saudi Electricity Co. (SEC) — the operator.

The Central Substation, with a capacity of 1,707 MVA, and the Primary Substation, with 200 MVA, aim to accelerate the development of Diriyah and Wadi Safar. They are the first stations in the urban development project to feature a design inspired by the traditional Najdi architectural style, according to a statement picked up by Argaam.

The Central Substation, costing SAR 605 million, operates at 380/132/13.8 kV. It will support cultural, educational, commercial, residential, and hospitality projects in the Diriyah urban megaproject, including Diriyah Square, Qurain Cultural District, and Northern District.

SEC partnered with Saudi Services for Electro Mechanic Works Co. (SSEM) to implement the Central Substation. A SAR 316 million cable-laying project was also carried out in order to power the station, in cooperation with Civil & Electrical Projects Contracting Co. (CEPCO) to power the substation.

The SAR 77 million Primary Substation, operating at 132/33 kV with a 200 MVA capacity, will be a key source of energy in the Wadi Safar project. The latter comprises several hospitality venues, sports facilities, and attractions such as the Royal Equestrian and Polo Club and Greg Norman-designed Wadi Safar Golf Course.

SEC executed the Primary Substation jointly with MAETEL Contracting Co. Its operation required implementing a SAR 168 million cable-laying project, in partnership with Delta Contracting Co.

The two substations are part of the many assets that Diriyah Co. is working to establish in the urban development project. Being one of the five megaprojects being undertaken by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), the Diriyah project aims to host 100,000 residents, create 178,000 jobs, and attract 50 million annual visitors by 2030.

It is expected to contribute SAR 70 billion to the 2030 Saudi GDP.

According to Argaam’s data, in 2020, the Diriyah Gate Development Authority launched the SAR 75 billion first phase of the historic Diriyah renovation project. The seven-square-kilometer master plan includes diverse cultural, tourist, and entertainment attractions, reflecting the Saudi Vision 2030’s goals.
