Saudi Arabia’s Waad Al Shamal Phosphate Co. is expected to go on stream in 2017, the chief financial officer of the Mosaic Co. said on Wednesday, ICIS reported.

The joint venture project— 60 percent owned by Saudi Arabian Mining Co.

(Maaden), 25 percent by US-based Mosaic Co. and 15 percent by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation— is expected to be the lowest-cost phosphate producer as it will benefit from Saudi Arabia’s low, subsidized natural gas and from low sulphur prices, Rich Mack said.

Waad Al Shamal is expected to produce three million tons of phosphate annually, with Mosaic marketing 25 percent of that, according to information on the company’s website.

Mosaic is the world’s largest producer of finished concentrated phosphates, with an operational capacity of 11.7 million tons per year.
