Saudi Arabian Mining Co. (Maaden) has completed up to 70 percent of Waad al Shamaal Phosphate industrial complex, CEO Khalid Mudaifer told Al Arabiya.
The first phase of the $7.5 billion project will be completed this year and it covers the infrastructure and housing facilities, he added.
The joint venture project will feature seven phosphate processing plants that will produce a total of 16 million tons of PPA, STPP, and DCP/MCP. It is 60 percent owned by (Maaden), 25 percent by U.S.-based Mosaic Co., and 15 percent by Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC).
In 2012, Bechtel Construction, which developed the project’s master plan, was awarded the overall management contract. The U.S. contractor oversees the engineering and construction of the planned city and industrial complex near Turayf in northern Saudi Arabia.
The 440-square-kilometer complex will also include commercial, housing, and educational facilities.
