Work begins on world’s largest gas complex in Saudi

Construction work has started on the $2.1 billion gas complex that will serve Saudi Aramco's Jazan refinery and terminal, Jazan Gas Projects Company (JGPC) said in a statement Tuesday.

The contract was awarded to JGPC, a joint venture between ACWA Holding and Air Products, which will develop the facility on a build, own and operate basis.

The industrial gas complex is expected to be largest in the world and will supply 75,000 metric tons per day (20,000 oxygen and 55,000 nitrogen) for 20 years to Saudi Aramco’s refinery, which is currently under construction in Jazan. It will also require 600 MW to operate and will consist of six air separation trains.

Jazan area projects general manager Fuad Al-Azman said the gas complex is the largest third-party project that Saudi Aramco has awarded to the private sector.

The plant is likely will create 100 direct local jobs when in operation.

"Construction on-site started a month earlier than planned, initial drawings have been issued and we have a clear plan of mobilization to Jazan from this date,” Mohammad Abunayyan, chairman of JGPC, said in the statement.
