Saudi Arabia shut down 134 factories last year bringing the total to 7,630 in Q1 2018, amid a decline in the number of plants operating under various sectors in the Kingdom, data from the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources showed.

 

As many as 33 factories producing plastics and rubber products were closed, bringing the total to 997 in the same period.

 

The combined capital of these plants increased by almost SAR 1 billion to SAR 1.10 trillion.

 

They had a total workforce of over 1.05 million employees, a decline of 6,000 workers when compared to 2017.

 

Domestic factories accounted for 83 percent, or 6,357 of the total number of factories, while foreign facilities accounted for 616. Joint investments stood at 657.
