US has not asked OPEC to increase oil output: Al Mazrouei

OPEC has not been asked by the United States to boost oil production amid collapsing output in Venezuela and US sanctions on Iran, its president Suhail Al Mazrouei told CNN on Monday.

"The US is important to us, but ... we have not received any official communication, or even unofficial communication, from the administration," said Al Mazrouei, who is also the energy minister of the United Arab Emirates.

"I can tell you there is no truth in that whatsoever," he told the news channel.

Last week, news agencies reported that the Trump administration had "quietly" asked Saudi Arabia and some other OPEC members to increase oil production.

The price of crude has fallen since hitting a recent peak of $72 in late May. 

OPEC oil producers and Russia are due to meet in Vienna on June 22 to discuss easing supply caps that have been in place since the beginning of 2017.
