S&P 500, Nasdaq end lower for first time in 8 sessions
The US stock indices mostly closed Thursday on a down note, as markets evaluated economic data showing the largest drop in weekly jobless claims since September 2023, and a slowdown in the core inflation rate, marking the lowest pace of price increases in more than three years.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 32 points, or 0.1%, closing at 39,753 points, maintaining its way up for the second straight session.
The S&P 500 index eased nearly 0.9%, or 49 points, to end at 5,584 points. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 1.95%, or 364 points, to close at 18,283 points. Both indices ended in the red territory for the first time since June 28.
Elsewhere, the STOXX Europe 600 Index edged up 0.6% to 519.5 points, closing at the highest level of 522.8 since June 12.
Germany’s DAX 40 Index added 0.7% to 18,534 points. FTSE 100 closed 0.35% up at 8,223 points.
The CAC 40 Index closed 0.7% higher at 7,627 points.
The Nikkei 225 gained 0.95%, or 392 points, to 42,224 points, achieving a record close for the third consecutive session. TOPIX also jumped 0.7% to 2,929 points.
On the other hand, Brent crude oil futures for September delivery rose 0.4%, or 32 cents, to $85.40 per barrel.
US WTI crude oil for August delivery edged up 0.65%, or 52 cents, to $82.62 per barrel.
The prices of the yellow metal's futures for August delivery climbed by 1.75%, or $42.2, to $2,421.90 per ounce.
Meanwhile, economic data showed that the Core Consumer Price Index (excluding volatile food and energy prices) rose 0.1% month-on-month and 3.3% year-on-year in June, against expectations of 0.2% and 3.4%, respectively, marking the slowest annual increase since April 2021.
The US Department of Labor revealed that the number of initial jobless claims fell by 17,000 to 222,000 in the week ended July 6, while a decline to 236,000 was projected, marking the lowest level since late May.
