Dow Jones snaps 6-session winning streak ahead of Fed minutes
US stock indices fell after a volatile session on Aug. 20 as investors booked profits to benefit from gains of the previous sessions, and in anticipation of the minutes of the Federal Reserve meeting on Aug. 21.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined for the first time in six sessions, ending 0.15% or 61 points lower at 40,834 points.
The S&P 500 index fell by 0.2%, or 11 points, to 5,597 points, and the Nasdaq Composite Index lost 0.35%, or 59 points, to 17,816 points. The benchmarks ended their earlier winning streak.
As for European markets, the STOXX Europe 600 inched down 0.45% to 512.2 points.
FTSE 100 fell 1% to end at 8,273 points. Germany’s DAX 40 Index edged down 0.35% to 18,357 points. The French CAC 40 Index shed 0.2% to close at 7,485 points.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 1.80%, or 674 points, to 38,062 points, and the broader TOPIX index added 1.1% to 2,670 points.
In the oil market, futures contracts for Brent crude for October delivery fell by 0.6%, or 46 cents, to $77.20 per barrel.
Meanwhile, prices of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil for September delivery (expires today) dropped 0.45%, or 33 cents, to $74.04 per barrel.
Gold futures prices for December delivery increased by 0.35%, or $9.3, to $2,550.6 per ounce, hitting a record level for the sixth time this month.
