Nasdaq rises as US stocks recover losses
US stock indices recovered their earlier losses by the end of Oct. 21’s session, as they remained under pressure from rising Treasury yields amid economic uncertainty.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average held steady at 42,924 points after dropping to 42,718 points earlier in the session.
The S&P 500 also remained flat at 5,851 points after sliding to 5,821 points, while the Nasdaq Composite managed to rise 0.2%, adding 33 points to close at 18,573 points.
In European markets, the STOXX Europe 600 inched down by 0.2% to 520.4 points, with tech, mining, and energy stocks cushioning deeper losses.
France's CAC 40 remained flat at 7,535 points, while the UK's FTSE 100 dipped 0.15% to 8,306 points. Germany's DAX slid 0.2%, closing at 19,421 points.
In Asia, Japan's Nikkei dropped 1.4%, shedding 542 points to end at 38,411 points, while the broader Topix index fell over 1% to 2,651 points.
On the oil front, Brent crude futures for December delivery climbed 2.35%, or $1.75, to settle at $76.04 a barrel.
Meanwhile, US WTI crude for November delivery, which expired today, gained 2.2%, or $1.53, to close at $72.09 a barrel.
In precious metals, gold futures for December delivery rose 0.75%, or $20.9, to a record high of $2,759.8 per ounce.
