Dow Jones falls first time in 6 sessions, posts weekly gain
US indices closed the last Friday of 2024 in red amid a rise in Treasury yields. However, they ended their weekly losing streak.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.75%, or 333 points, to settle at 42,992 points, the first loss in six sessions. However, it recorded weekly gain of 0.35%.
The S&P 500 index fell 1.1%, or 66 points, to 5,970 points, recording a weekly gain of 0.65%.
Similarly, Nasdaq Composite lost 1.5%, or 298 points, to close at 19,722 points.
As for European markets, the STOXX Europe 600 inched up 0.65% to 507.1 points.
The British FTSE index rose 0.15% to 8,149 points, while the German DAX index was up 0.7% to 19,984 points. The French CAC 40 index rose 1% to 7,355 points.
The Nikkei index advanced 1.80% to 40,281 points, and the broader Topix index gained 1.25% to 2,801 points.
Brent crude futures for February 2025 delivery leapt 1.25%, or $0.91, to $74.17 per barrel. The US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for February 2025 delivery also increased over 1.4%, or $0.98, to $70.6 per barrel. Both contracts recorded weekly gains of 1.7% and 1.65%, respectively.
Regarding gold, futures prices for February delivery were up 0.85%, or $22, to $2,631.9 per ounce, with a weekly loss of 0.5%.
