National Industrialization Co. (Tasnee) is undertaking initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint from flaring, said CEO Mutlaq Al Morished.

“Our footprint is 0.7% of the total footprint of Saudi Arabia, which is quite small. However, we are doing our part as 30% of our footprint is due to flaring and plant reliability. We are fixing it as it is easy to fix,” he said during a panel discussion on the second day of the 15th Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) Forum.

According to Tasnee’s latest sustainability report, the company’s petrochemicals business unit reduced overall flaring and the flaring intensity significantly by 16% and 17%, respectively, from 2019 to 2020.

“These improvements were due to our aims for reducing flaring where possible and we hope to continue similar improvements in 2021,” the report said.

According to Al Morished, Saudi Arabia has a very low carbon footprint compared to Europe, the US, and China.

He further emphasized that the company looks at better things for the environment, sustainability and profitability whenever it plans to invest.

In October, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said Saudi Arabia aims to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2060, with plans to reduce its carbon emissions by 278 million tons per year by 2030.
