KSA mulls to automate 40% of power grids by end-2025: Minister

Saudi Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said the Kingdom aims to automate 40% of its electricity distribution networks by the end of 2025. 

This percentage reflects the optimal balance between operational efficiency and economic feasibility, with 32% of this goal already achieved, the minister said at the 12th Saudi Smart Grid Conference.

He indicated that work is also underway to establish nine topnotch centers by 2026. The centers will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies enabling precise real-time monitoring of network systems and the taking of effective AI-driven decisions, thereby enhancing the sustainability of operations.

The prince further highlighted the sector's extensive digital transformation as part of Vision 2030. By March 2021, more than 11 million smart meters had been installed across the Kingdom. The meters play a key role in improving energy consumption efficiency, enabling consumers to monitor their usage in real time and make informed decisions on electricity rationalization. Additionally, the meters improve service reliability through analyzing data using AI.

The minister stressed the energy sector's commitment to advancing the Kingdom's electricity infrastructure, supporting digital transformation and automation in networks, as well as enhancing grid reliability and resilience, in line with Saudi Arabia's global leadership in the energy sector.
