Spending on domestic tourism in Saudi Arabia increased to SAR 42.2 billion in the first nine months of 2015, compared to SAR 35.4 billion in the same period last year, new figures from the kingdom's Tourism Information and Research Center (MAS) showed.

 

Domestic tourism trips amounted to 43.3 million between January and September, up from 27.8 million in the same period in 2014. That figure is projected to reach 39.3 million by the end of this year and 56.1 million by 2020.

 

Spending on domestic tourism is expected to grow to SAR 48.8 billion at the end of 2015 and hit nearly SAR 100 billion by 2020.

 

In 2014, domestic trips jumped 56 percent year-on-year (YOY) to 37.1 million, while spending surged 84 percent to SAR 43.1 billion.

Makkah emerged as the top tourism destination with 14.7 million trips in 2014. Al-Madinah came second with 5.2 million trips.
