US President Donald Trump has expressed his intent to remain a steadfast partner of Saudi Arabia to ensure the interest of United States and other partners in the region.
“After the US, Saudi Arabia is the largest oil producing nation in the world. They have worked closely with us and have been very responsive to my requests to keeping oil prices at reasonable levels,” Trump said in an official White House statement on Tuesday.
“I intend to ensure that, in a very dangerous world, America is pursuing its national interests and vigorously contesting countries that wish to do us harm,” he added.
Trump also reiterated the fact that Saudi Arabia would seek deals elsewhere if US abandons its support.
“Of the $450 billion that Saudi will spend with us, $110 billion will be spent on the purchase of military equipment from Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and many other great U.S. defense contractors. If we foolishly cancel these contracts, they will get the military equipment and other things from Russia and China, who would be then very, very happy,” he said in the statement.
Trump also pointed out the fact that Saudi Arabia has agreed to spend billions of dollars in leading the fight against terrorism.
The American leader is set to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman next week at the G20 summit in Argentina.
