A look at Hajj pilgrimage over 10 years

The annual Hajj pilgrimage season in Saudi Arabia began Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, as thousands of pilgrims travel to Makkah from inside and outside the Kingdom.

 

Last year, around 2.37 million pilgrims have registered to perform the pilgrimage, up 1 percent from the previous year.

Last year, a total of 612,000 pilgrims, or 26 percent of the total number of pilgrims, came for Hajj from inside the Kingdom. Meanwhile, 1.76 million pilgrims, accounting for 74 percent of the total, came from other countries.

Over 257,000 employees representing more than 40 government agencies are serving pilgrims at the holy sites this year.

As for accommodation, the total of 5,639 buildings (Hotels, apartments and buildings) were provided for Hajj pilgrims in both Makkah and Madinah with a capacity reaching 2.78 million pilgrims.

 

The Hajj and Umrah ministry has launched this year a bundle of projects and initiatives, aiming to improve the services provided to pilgrims from pre-arrival until they return back home.

 

The projects include smart hajj, service control, grouping, increasing capacity and developing accommodation, the “Be Helpful” volunteering initiative, holy shrines electronic services, and the bag-less hajj initiative.
