Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) will embark on installing smart metering systems as of Feb. 19, 2020 in three phases, CEO Fahad Al-Sudairi said in a statement.

The project’s first phase targets installation of 5.3 million meters by the end of April.

The second and third phases target 5 million and 8 million smart meters by the end of September and December, 2020, respectively.

“A total of 10 million smart meters will be installed for all subscribers by the end of March 2021,” Al-Sudairi added.

As many as 33,000 smart meters will be installed everyday between 30 and 40 minutes.

The smart metering project will lead the utility provider and subscribers to a new era and enhance transparency, in line with the best global standards, Al-Sudairi concluded.

The Gulf’s largest utility provider on Dec. 19 signed contracts of the smart metering project to install and commission 10 million smart meters for consumers across the Kingdom for a total cost of SAR 9.56 billion, Argaam reported.
