The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell by 1% to SAR 8.45 billion in the week ending Sept. 5, 2020, from SAR 8.55 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that a total of 69.7 million transactions were processed in the week ending Sept. 5.

The POS sales drop during the week ending Sept. 5, was attributed to a 34% decline in the education sector after witnessing a notable increase in the week before, with the beginning of the academic year.
The decline was also due to a drop recreation & culture and food & beverages by 10% and 16%, respectively.
On the other hand, the remaining sectors saw an increase in their POS transactions led by miscellaneous goods & services which rose by 10%. It was followed by telecommunications and clothes and footwear which saw 9% and 8% increase, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the same week, valued at nearly SAR 1.33 billion, followed by restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 1.02 billion and the healthcare sector with SAR 701.2 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with SAR 2.74 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with over SAR 1.4 billion.
