The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell by 7% to SAR 7.52 billion in the week ending Nov. 14, 2020, from SAR 8.08 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA) showed.
Saudi Arabia started implementing a 15% value-added tax (VAT) from July 1, 2020.
Data showed that a total of 73.3 million transactions were processed in the week ending Nov. 14.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS sales during the week except for the telecommunication and jewelry sectors.
Education sector fell the most by 22% through sales of SAR 53.9 million, it was followed by the recreation & culture sector (15%) and by electronics and electric appliances (14%).
Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the week, valued at nearly SAR 1.16 billion, followed by restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 1.01 billion and the clothes and footwear sector with SAR 616.2 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with SAR 2.44 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with over SAR 1.22 billion.
