POS transactions fall 4% to SAR 8.18 bln in week ending Jan. 16: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions declined by 4% to SAR 8.18 billion in the week ending Jan. 16, 2021, from SAR 8.52 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

 

A total of 81.1 million transactions were processed during the period.

Most sectors witnessed a decline in POS sales during the week, led by Hotels that dropped by 16% with sales of SAR 233.7 million, followed by Clothes and Footwear down 15%.

 

Education sector surged by 126% during the week to SAR 140 million, in coincidence with preparation for the second semester.

 

Consumer spending focused on Food & Beverages sector during the week, valued at nearly SAR 1.21 billion, followed by Restaurants & Cafes (SAR 1.19 billion) and Miscellaneous Goods & Services (SAR 650.7 million).

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with SAR 2.59 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with over SAR 1.44 billion.
