The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell by 1% to SAR 8.46 billion in the week ending March 20, 2021, from SAR 8.55 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that a total of 86 million transactions were processed in the week ending March 6, the highest since the start of monitoring weekly POS operations in May 2020.

Most of the sectors witnessed a decline in POS sales during the week ending March 20, led by education, which dropped by 17% through sales of SAR 67.8 million. It was followed by hotels and fuel stations sectors, with 8% and 6% decline, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the week, valued at nearly SAR 1.26 billion, followed by restaurants and cafes sector with sales of SAR 1.08 billion and miscellaneous goods & services sector with SAR 717.1 million in sales.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.7 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with over SAR 1.39 billion.
