POS transactions drop 21% to SAR 8.62 bln in week ending May 15: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell by 21% to SAR 8.62 billion in the week ending May 15, 2021, from SAR 10.88 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

 

Data showed that a total of 90.9 million transactions were processed in the week ending May 15.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS during the week ending May 15, except for hotels, fuel stations, and restaurants & cafes sectors.

The education sector led the decline with a fall of about 83%, followed by construction and building materials sector that dropped 54%.

 

Consumer spending focused on restaurants & cafes sector during the week, valued at nearly SAR 1.34 billion, followed by food and beverages with sales of SAR 1.30 million and clothes & footwear with SAR 1.17 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.39 billion, representing 28% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with over SAR 1.41 billion.
