POS transactions drop 18% to SAR 7.05 bln in week ending May 22: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell by 18% to SAR 7.05 billion in the week ending May 22, 2021, from SAR 8.62 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

 

Data showed that a total of 82.2 million transactions were processed in the week ending May 22.

Most sectors witnessed a decline in POS during the week ending May 22, led by clothes & footwear (-64%) with SAR 417.4 million in sales, and jewelry (-59%).

 

Consumer spending focused on restaurants & cafes sector during the week, valued at nearly SAR 1.12 billion, followed by food and beverages with sales of SAR 1.09 billion and miscellaneous goods & services with SAR 593.7 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.11 billion, representing 30% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.15 billion.
