The point-of-sale (POS) transactions rose by 30% to SAR 9.17 billion in the week ending May 29, 2021, from SAR 7.05 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that a total of 96.5 million transactions were processed in the week ending May 29.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using their ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

The POS transactions of all sectors rose during the week ending May 29, led by education sector with an increase of 47%, through sales amounting to SAR 69.7 million. It was followed by transport with 45% rise.
Consumer spending focused on food & beverages sector during the week, valued at nearly SAR 1.49 billion, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with sales of SAR 1.27 billion, and miscellaneous goods & services with SAR 823.5 million.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with SAR 2.77 billion, representing 30% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.44 billion.
