Omar Hariri, President of Saudi Ports Authority

Omar Hariri, President of Saudi Ports Authority (MAWANI), said that ports play a very important role in international trade movement and national industry, as they transfer over 70% of Saudi Arabia’s imports and more than 95% of exports.

A total of 9.5 million containers annually were handled in 2020. The Kingdom’s transport strategy targets a capacity of more than 40 million containers annually by 2030.

The strategy enables the ports sector to invest in infrastructure, expand capacity and link ports to different transport patterns that facilitate the passage of goods and boost transshipment, Hariri added in a press conference.

“We target digital transformation to convert our ports into smart ports and allow us to compete with the largest and best international ports,” Hariri added.

The new strategy aims to strengthen partnership with the private sector, through expansion in new awards across all Saudi ports, he concluded.
