The implementation of the fourth phase of the Saudi Building Code (SBC) begins today, Aug. 9, which includes business buildings such as airports, banks, TV stations and post offices.

The SBC was enacted by the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing and relevant entities to achieve the set of standards and requirements and executive regulations related to building and construction.

The code was enforced on July 1, with first phase for residential projects.

The building code applies to all construction works in public and private sectors on new buildings, and includes design, execution, operation, maintenance and modifications. For existing buildings, it includes renovation and expansion works.

SBC is a set of legal, administrative and technical regulations and requirements that specify the minimum standards for construction, in order to ensure public safety and health.

This will be done through test of durability and stability of buildings and facilities, providing a healthy environment, lighting and adequate ventilation, rationalizing energy, carrying out thermal insulation, and protecting lives and property from earthquakes and other building-related hazards.
