The point-of-sale (POS) transactions declined by 3% to SAR 8.71 billion in the week ending Aug. 14, from SAR 9.02 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that a total of 104.7 million transactions were processed in the week ending Aug. 14.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS during the week ending Aug. 14, except for education and jewelry, which increased by 56% and 6%, respectively.
Electronics & electric appliances sector led the decline, falling 12% in the week. It was followed by clothes & footwear and hotels sectors with a 9% decline each.
Consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector in the week ending Aug. 14, with nearly SAR 1.34 billion, representing 15% of POS transactions, followed by restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 1.25 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.63 billion, representing 30% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.41 billion.
