Electronic Payment Machine
The point-of-sale (POS) transactions leapt by 32% to SAR 10.5 billion in the week ended Aug. 28, from SAR 8 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.
Data showed that a total of 110.5 million transactions were processed in the week.
POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed an increase in POS during the same period, led by education sector, which surged by 207%, driven by the return of schools. It was followed by recreation & culture and telecommunications, which rose 66% and 61%, respectively.
Consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.6 billion, representing 15% of POS transactions, followed by restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 1.3 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 3.3 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.65 billion.
