POS transactions cross SAR 11 bln in week ending Oct. 2: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions rose by 25% to SAR 11.03 billion in the week ending Oct. 2, from SAR 8.85 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

  

Data showed that 119.1 million transactions were processed in the week ending Oct. 2.

 

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

Most sectors witnessed a rise in POS during the week ending Oct. 2, led by the education sector, which soared by 127%. Food and beverages sector came second with an increase of 51%.

 

 On the other hand, furniture and hotels sectors retreated by 2% and 14%, respectively.

 

Consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.83 billion, representing 17% of POS transactions, followed by the restaurants and cafes sector with SAR 1.39 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 3.37 billion, representing 31% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.68 billion.
