Uber Technologies Inc. and its subsidiary Careem faced tax bills worth SAR 375 million ($100 million) in Saudi Arabia, Bloomberg reported, citing sources with knowledge of the matter.
The claims are related to a dispute over how to calculate the value-added tax (VAT) owed over the past few years, including hefty penalties for late payment, the sources added.
The two companies made a settlement with Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) in this regard, Asharq TV channel reported, citing an unnamed source.
The two companies might have had a previous objection to the tax assessment, the source added, noting that they had lost similar lawsuits in other countries, but did not give further details.
