POS transactions reach SAR 8 bln in week ending Oct. 23: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell 8% to SAR 8.02 billion in the week ending Oct. 23, from SAR 8.68 billion in the previous week, the lowest in nine weeks, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.

 

Data showed that 102.8 million transactions were processed in the week ending Oct. 23.

 

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All others witnessed a decline in POS, except for construction materials sector that inched up 0.4%, during the week ending Oct. 23.

 

Education sector led the decliners with a 26% drop followed by telecommunications and recreation & culture sectors falling 24% and 14%, respectively.

 

Consumer spending focused on the food and beverages sector and restaurants & cafes sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.19 billion each.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.53 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.29 billion.
