POS transactions hit SAR 8.5 bln in week ending Nov. 20: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell 8% to SAR 8.46 billion in the week ending Nov. 20, from SAR 9.17 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.  

   

Data showed that 107.84 million transactions were processed in the week ending Nov. 20.  

  

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week ending Nov. 20, led by the public utilities, which fell 23%. It was followed by electronics & electric appliances and education sectors with a drop of 19% each.

 

Consumer spending focused on the food & beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.22 billion, representing 14% of POS transactions, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.20 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 2.74 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.31 billion.
