POS transactions hit SAR 10 bln in week ending Dec. 11: SAMA

The point-of-sale (POS) transactions fell 17% to SAR 10.01 billion in the week ending Dec. 11, from SAR 12.1 billion in the previous week, data issued by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) showed.  

   

Data showed that 120.1 million transactions were processed in the week ending Dec. 11.  

  

POS transactions represent what is spent by consumers using ATM cards and credit cards in shopping malls, retail stores, pharmacies, etc.

All sectors witnessed a decline in POS transactions during the week ending Dec. 11, except for education sector which rose by 164%.

 

Hotels sector led the declines by 41%, followed by clothes & footwear and jewelry sectors falling by 29% and 23%, respectively. 

 

Consumer spending focused on the food & beverages sector in the week, with nearly SAR 1.46 billion, followed by the restaurants & cafes sector with SAR 1.39 billion.

Riyadh topped the POS transactions by cities in terms of value with nearly SAR 3.21 billion, representing 32% of the total sales. Jeddah came second with SAR 1.55 billion.
